Interesting - looks like music can reduce the sensation of pain in babies. Scientists got together a bunch of studies and looked at them to conclude the soothing music reduced pain, lowered heart rates, and increased oxygenation in blood. How can you tell from a baby whether this is working? Looks like they looked at these things by measuring baby vitals during heel pricks, circumcision (ouch), and suckling.

Anyway, I don’t know if the quality of the studies was very good. I bet the differences between babies with and without music was pretty miniscule, you know.

DRM is “digital rights management”, and is a label usually attached to music files like mp3s purchased over the internet at vendors like Napster, eMusic or iTunes. Music files with DRM are restricted in the sense that they cannot be easily transferred from one computer to another with playability intact. When it’s moved to a computer after being purchased, the file usually cannot be played. Well, Apple finally got rid of this restriction. Other vendors have already done so either completely or in a limited fashion. But Apple iTunes really is the 8 billion pound gorilla in online music sales, and their action portends a turning point in online music vending. What this means is that we’re free to copy, trade this music (in accordance with copyright law of course), principally this allows us to move these files around different computers and still retain the ability to play them. About time I think.

Allman brothers
One of the greatest Southern rock bands Allman Brothers spent the last two weeks playing at New York’s Beacon Theater. Stars such as Boz Skaggs, Eric Clapton, and strangely enough, Bruce Willis, joined them on stage. Apparently Bruce Willis had a lot of practice with the harmonica in an R&B band in his younger days before acting on stage and screen.
March 26th, the Allman Brothers celebrated a 40th anniversary as a band! They don’t show signs of slowing down.

What a pairing. I just watched The Watchmen, which is incidentally a great adaptation. Surprisingly, the music played a big part in the film I think. Lots of recognizable stuff by Bob Dylan, and then weird things, like Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah. From Boston Phoenix article:
James Parker: The sex scene between Nite Owl and Silk Spectre II is pretty great — the boots, the zips. And you’ve got Leonard Cohen doing “Hallelujah” over it.
Zack Snyder: Well, I originally had a different version of “Hallelujah” on that scene — it was the version by Allison Crowe, and it was really beautiful. Too beautiful, as it turned out, because when I showed it to my buddies, they were like, “Wow, you really mean this, this love scene.” So I was like, okay, that didn’t work. But with the Leonard Cohen, in that moment, it’s a little sadder of a song, it’s a little bit more twisted, it’s a little more broken, which expresses to me what’s going on in that scene, between those two characters.

Rumor mill: Joan Baez at a concert with John Mellencamp allegedly mentioned that she is privy to information that John will be touring with Bob Dylan. What’s more, Mellencamp recently reported on his Website: “A special tour is in the works, slated to start in early July and run through the end of August. It will play at minor league baseball fields, with John sharing top billing with two other major artists.”
From a solid source, the Dylan fansite Bob Links, another musician to be featured will likely be Willie Nelson.
